MONTI DISTRICT TOUR
The Monti District Private Tour by Rome is Easy is intended for those travelers who want to read a different book of Roman history and architecture, and those who are ready to discover the beauty of a real piece of the city of Rome, where there are no high fashion shops or fancy retailers, but that is the center instead of the Roman working class and the landscape of different layers of history and architecture.
Nowadays Monti has become an enclave for both young Italian artists and older artisans’ workshops that have been handed down from one generation to another.
A lively vibe goes through this picturesque quarter, whose beauty lies in the vitality and creativity of the people that work here, in the colors of the bougainvillea that climbs down the walls of the buildings, in the fragrance of the freshly baked bread and the charm of its history.

The Rione Monti
Just a few steps away from the Colosseum and you’ll find yourself in the neighborhood of Monti, once residence of the poorest and disreputable locals, and now buzzing with fashion shops, traditional restaurants, art galleries, bars, bookstore cafes, vintage clothing shops and organic markets.
The Rione Monti is the most ancient quarter in Rome, where it’s possible to find traces from the Roman age, the Middle Age and the Renaissance. In other words, the district is characterized by a series of styles that cover nearly 2500 years of history.
With its narrow streets and high buildings from different periods, the real heart of the Rione Monti is the old Suburra (suburbs in Latin), where artisans’ workshops, nightclubs and art galleries are located. Within the maze of alleys and suggestive perspective series, it almost feels like being in another little town just inside the city.
Start At Santa Maria Maggiore
Your tour will start at Santa Maria Maggiore square, right in the heart of Monti. Here you’ll be visiting the impressive basilica, decorated with beautiful mosaics and the 36 works commissioned by the Pope Sisto III, one of the most interesting example of the mosaic art in the Roman Empire. Several legends and plots are linked to this church and your private guide will be your story teller during the entire journey!
Discovering The Rione
We will continue our tour walking through the alleys of Monti. From via Leonina we will reach piazza degli Zingari that, with its bohemian charm, opens the way to via Urbana.
We will have the time to stop and try one of the most appreciated artisanal gelato in Rome. Art and handicraft, cafes an theater, photographical exhibits, movida and folklore. Via Urbana is all this and much more. In the ups and downs of small streets and alleys we will find the workshops of the local artisans, who represents the longstanding Italian tradition of craftsmanship.
A First-Hand Experience
As we aim at giving you a first-hand experience of this local craftsmanship, we will pay a visit to some of the several workshops down the streets. From mosaics, to hand crafted candles and glass processing, you’ll have the opportunity to see passionate artisans at work and discover the secrets behind the creation of their beautiful works.
